Wedding & Portrait Photography

Remember this post? The one where I talked about being terrified of what I was going to do after art school. The post where I confessed art school did not prep me in anyway to know what options I had to make a living?

But, and here’s the big but, the post ALSO said there is an amazing museum in NYC who is looking to help kids understand how many different and interesting options they have if they decide to go to art school. And this museum contacted me. They had been looking for a wedding photographer to showcase in their video and wanted to document how I work at weddings. They wanted to shoot me, shooting an LGBT couple throughout their wedding day. Cue me wanting to barf thinking about how dumb I’ll look but quickly throwing that aside because this was such a cool project.

And that’s where you come in!

Because I’m looking for an LGBT couple who is getting married December-May on a date that I’m still available on. You must be getting married in CT or NYC. And most importantly, you must be ok with a videographer and an assistant being present. They will be doing video of me and how I work, so there will be no interruption to your wedding. However, they will be present for most of the day. Whichever couple I photograph will receive a significant discount in exchange for opening up your wedding to this documentary.

Please email me at kelly@kellyprizel.com with your names, wedding date, wedding venue, and a little bit about yourself.

Fall(ing)

The rain and cool weather seem to dance around, telling everyone it’s officially fall. Boot weather. Pick up the orange leaves weather. But, I’m not going to lie, Fall has been not kind to me. I have been caught up in a whirlwind of things happening, one right after the other, that have knocked me to the ground. It’s usually my favorite season, but I haven’t had time to enjoy it because of the crisis mode I’m in. “Just get through. Just get through.” And sometimes, this fall, I have even been so scared, I didn’t know I could go there. I’m always the one taking care of the pets, Natalie, my loved ones. How did I end up in the hospital, so weak I couldn’t even raise my hands to brush my teeth? I needed someone to brush my teeth!! And not just anyone, my wife Natalie. And when this little fall treat arrived on my kitchen counter, sparkling of caramel and fall, I knew that although I’m strong enough now to raise my hands and even pick up my camera to shoot weddings, she was still there, going to my endless doctor appointments, helping me catch up with work, and listening to me when I want to throw the countless pills in the trash because of all the side effects. We are so close to figuring out a long term plan that will be easy and ensure I never fall into this situation again. I finally have an amazing medical team. And there will be next fall, that Natalie and I can both enjoy. Picking apples. Carving pumpkins. Because we will always support each other. Forever and always.

A Practical Wedding is a blog that is very near and dear to my heart. A good chunk of my clients read the blog and love just as much as I do. It’s the only place I advertise (besides my own site, So You’re EnGAYged) because I believe in it that much.

So when NY finally voted and passed same-sex marriages, Meg, the founder of APW decided it was time to throw a celebration, help a few couples get legally married, and give back to the LGBT community as well by raising money for Lambda Legal.

And all the sudden, before I know it, we are less than a week away from this amazing adventure. So if you’re in the NYC area, grab your tickets, support an amazing cause, and freaking have some fun!

Free Weddings: Two Marriages, One Universal Right

In the morning of August 25, 2011, A Practical Wedding and Lowe House Events will be throwing two free daytime weddings for couples who were selected through an application process. The weddings given away for Two Marriages, One Universal Right will take place on a beautiful fourteenth floor terrace with a city view with a legal officiant. The Terrace will also play host to flowers, cake and bubbly, plus room for friends and loved ones, as well as professional photographers. With lovely invitations designed by And Kathleen.

Dance Party: Yay New York!
Then, on the evening of August 25th, Yay New York! A Mass Reception to Celebrate Marriage Equality will be held in the same mid-town Manhattan space and is open to the public. DJ Whitney Day, an up-and-coming DJ in NYC’s LGBTQ nightlife scene, will be spinning. Decorations will include Confetti System pinatas, andMonogamy Wine will be flowing freely from the open bar. A dance-your-face-off celebration, Yay New York! is a party for everyone who wants to celebrate this historic moment in civil rights in style.

The Fundraiser

Because the organizers think that the best way to celebrate New York’s Marriage Equality Law is to help raise money to bring equality to other states as well, all attendees will be asked to make a suggested $40 tax-deductible donation to Lambda Legal at the door in an effort to raise $10,000 for the organization. Lambda Legal was chosen as the charity recipient because of their longstanding commitment to “achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender people and those with HIV through impact litigation, education and public policy work.”

The Tote Bags

To allow people who can’t attend the celebration to help support the event, we’re offering limited edition tote bags, for sale for just $20. They feature the Yay New York logo, a simple and evocative symbol of marriage equality. That and they’re super stylish. Get them before they are gone.

So when I went to the Mystic Aquarium with Lara awhile ago, she brought me some of the most delicious gluten-free super low fat/calorie cookies. She runs a baking blog, so you know they should be good. And, ohhhh yes, they were every bit as yummy as I hoped. So if you are having some celiacs over? Or have celiac disease yourself? Click that blog link and try them.

Because that’s exactly what we did. Natalie surprised me with a batch of the cookies a few minutes before our really good friends Emily and Sean came over. So we all indulged and enjoy the not-as-pretty-as-Lara’s cookies but just as yummy.

Natalie also indulged me by taking a few photos of me in my new scarf which I looooove. It’s a coral ikat pattern and I have been thinking up excuses to wear it. I was never a scarf girl but dang! So I decided as soon as she was done baking, we would take the photos….annnnnd as soon as we got outside Sean and Emily roll up in their car. Ya, you better believe I’m not vain enough to continue a photoshoot with my friends just waiting and staring at me. But I did get one photo I love. So that would explain all the cookie shots at night below except the one of me trying to look like a fashion model in 30 seconds.

So it’s summer. Wonderful, glorious summer. I’m wearing dresses I can throw on and forget about all day. I try not to wear any shoes because I love the feeling of grass on my toes, the sidewalk’s texture, running away from hot pavement. Although, I do wear shoes into stores/buildings- don’t worry.

But one thing I love about summer is getting to have lots of color in everything I wear. But what’s been missing lately? Color from my nails. They are boring. I want to paint them coral! Or teal! Or yellow! But I have been hitting a frustrating wall- nail polish I kept coming across didn’t meet the bunny test. I just couldn’t find cruelty-free and eco-friendly nail polish. And when I did? Ohhhh, it was ugly colors all over the place.

It may be a small, tiny even, thing but I finally found a nail polish that passes the bunny test and has fab colors. It gave me a summer boost of happiness. So yay for summer and all it’s small pleasures.
