Lake Champlain Vermont Wedding Northern Lights Cruise

With rain starting to come down, Lake Champlain is even more of a majestic backdrop for a wedding. There was a bit of fog and the colors of the sky, trees and lake became even richer. Sure, it meant we had to dance the night away inside the boat, but let me tell you, rain did not stop that party. Imagine you’re on a boat (yeah! I’m on a boat, ya…) for a wedding. There are probably 20 guests max. And 85% of them are lesbians. Oooooh you BET that was an awesome party. When Lady Gaga came on, we were even treated to a solo performance by one of the guests. I was laughing so hard at all of Ellie and Janet’s antics, I was laugh/crying by the end. And then actually crying when I had to say goodbye to Ellie and Janet…they were going back to Georgia. I was a blubbering mess, but so was Ellie, so we hugged and realized how awesome a time we all had had.
Let me reverse a bit because, as you can see from the skipping down the aisle of Ellie and badass dance moves of Janet, these are two creative, funny women. We plotted over skype about the wedding. Me in New Haven. Them in Georgia. But as I was shooting on the boat, I suddenly wanted to stow away in their suitcase. Here was an amazing LGBT community who all flew up from Georgia to support Ellie and Janet. I wanted to be best friends with everyone on the boat. And I almost was going to live in Georgia because that’s the other PhD program Natalie wanted to go to. Yale or Emory. If it had been Emory, these ladies would have been practically neighbors. Going through their images, I sometimes wish to move right on in with them. I mean, damn, that joy is impossible to ignore. So I got to document it and use my creativity to give them a gift I truly am blessed to give them. Documenting all that fun, that bond between their friends and family, and those vows (legal vows!!) they made.

American Visionary Museum Wedding Baltimore, MD

I am an American Visionary Museum Wedding addict. Having shot at AVAM before, I knew Laura and Kristin’s wedding would have that fun flair that creeps into every wedding held at the museum. They planned their wedding with being relaxed in mind; they got ready together and we headed off to do couple shots with plenty of time. So we explored and got so many fun couple shots I was trying not to give myself a high five. And then, the museum garden flooded with guests for a pre-ceremony hour of cocktails and fun. As the sun completely set, Shabbat was over and it was time to have the ceremony. Kristin and Laura worked closely with a lighting company to have dramatic ceremony photos that would look great at night. But Kristin and Laura didn’t have an easy wedding day. The strength of their amazing relationship was showcased to all present as Laura helped Kristin through the wedding day. Despite the frustration of a chronic illness rearing it’s ugly head. Despite the night ending in a trip to the ER and hospitalization. And everyone there knew that on that day, the day of celebrating their commitment, they were also living that commitment through it’s hardest trials.

Le Chateau South Salem NY Wedding

Natalie and I were driving down to Le Chateau in the early morning, with the orange leaves just starting to really turn on the trees. We were literally the 1st ones there at the venue. I set up the details to shoot in a room that was clearly not meant to be open with tables turned upside down, but I liked the worn texture of all the beat up furniture. I was kind of struck by the cufflinks-mini hammers and scissors? But I got a full explanation during the ceremony. Matthew had written Jeffrey a poem titled the Tailor and the Carpenter. This was not a regular kind of hokey poem. Oh no! This was a freaking amazing feat that had even Matthew crying. Can I mention yet again how much I love hand written vowels or poems or what ever? Or even picking a very personal book or poem makes all the difference. Whether it’s people bend over laughing or crying, I’m a sucker for a well thought out and very personal ceremony.

Or how it feels to watch the soul of a wedding unfold as your community gathers around to make your wedding happen and come to life, with friendship-love and family-love and romantic-love layering upon each other in the most perfect expression of joy you’ve ever experienced.”

Mountain Lakes House Princeton Wedding

Katherine and Dan met in school on the Academic Team. I’ve seen the nerdy pictures to prove it. I always watched those kids in high school on TV and was like, “How do they know that crap?!” But as their involvement in the Academic Team continued, Katherine sort of got her flirt on. So this wedding was a long time in the making.

If you need someone to organize your life, you should honestly call Katherine: excel spreadsheets, detailed timelines, but all with a giant laugh and a laid-back attitude. Can we clone her? One of the things I absolutely loved was watching them interact during the engagement shoot. We actually ended up doing one engagement shoot and one mini-shoot so that they could loosen up in front of the camera a little bit more. Katherine has an amazing way of getting Dan to come out of his shell and do quirky, stupid things that I asked them to do. It was worth it to make myself look like an idiot because I finally got genuine smiles from Dan.

There aren’t many people who take on the entire task of making their own wedding dress. But, oh, Katherine did. And with Dan’s multiple sisters accompanying her, there was a lot of oohing and ahhing at this amazing feat. She even sewed pockets into her dress…don’t we all want pockets? Luxe Events, their Day of Coordinating Team, did a great job bringing all of Katherine’s DIY projects together. And they set the perfect backdrop for them to get married under a giant tree on a warm sunny day.Katherine and Dan were clearly surrounded by friends who had been with them for a very long time because the toasts were chock full of hilarious stories that had everyone in tears laughing. There were references to the “Tiger Mom,” purposely missed high-fives, and the antics of the whole Academic Team. And ice cream. There should be more ice cream at weddings.
