Trip to Maine

Natalie and I went on a vacation to Maine in late July and I enjoyed it. Which is a miracle because usually after 2 days on vacation I’m thinking “Omg…my inbox is probably full. When I get back it’s going to take hours and hours to do. I have soooo much editing to do…agghhh…I hate vacation, it’s putting me so behind!” In fact, I was so calm and ignoring my emails/work so much Natalie got a little nervous. She kept asking me if it was ok I wasn’t working 2-3 hours a day on my vacation- cause that’s what I normally do. But I’m trying really hard to be able to relax and experience things more. Which is why I only took my camera with me on 1 out of 7 days we spent in Maine.

Mostly we read on the beach as that’s my top favorite thing to do on vacation. We went whale watching and saw giiiiiant fin whales (the second largest whale…freakin huge). We ate lots and lots of gluten free seafood. I fell in love with a small town in New Hampshire called Portsmouth. But mostly, Natalie and I enjoyed being together with no obligations.

What made me laugh about this is that Portsmouth is a small city by New England standards! :-)

It is a nice little town though, isn’t it?

I’m used to big cities like DC and NYC so I always compare things to that…I’m not a New England girl to the core yet :)

Sneak Peak of CT, VT, and NJ weddings

I’m so excited about all the weddings just waiting to be blogged. Some I’m waiting on because they are being blogged about. Some I’m waiting on to finnish editing the whole wedding first. But it’s high time I gave you a little peak of what’s to come.

First up: Asbury Park NJ Wedding of Sarah and Nicole. You haven’t even seen the ocean couple shots yet!

Next is a New Canaan, CT wedding. Lots of amazing cultural traditions mixed together.

And lastly, a sneak peak of Yarrow and Jen’s wedding at the Hubble Homestead in Vermont. Yes- this is the carnival wedding.

New York City Subway Trash The Dress or Suit or Wedding Attire

So I haven’t posted Mandy and Bekah’s wedding yet because it’s being blogged about over on So You’re EnGAYged (read all of Mandy’s posts) but I AM blogging about their Day After Session in NYC. The funny thing about New York is that most people totally ignore all the crazy/weird things going on but a girl in a wedding dress that’s letting her dress drag on the ground…people get all kinds of upset. Lots of comments/people coming up to warn Mandy.

We had lots of fun. I got to hear all about New York and all the people from the wedding the night before. And it was nice to run around NYC without a broken foot like the engagement session. Let me tell you…subways are a bitch with a broken foot. New York needs to work on its accessibility. For reals.

Rocky Neck Pavilion Park Engagement

Kevin and Kate knew they wanted beach engagement shots. But they are also avid campers, hikers, and generally way more familiar with how to setup a tent or build a fire than I am. So, I suggested we combine the two. They were willing to setup camp if I was willing to wait and wait and wait for the fire to be juuuuust right for some smores shots. But we got them! I’ll admit that I’m really falling in love with CT the more I do engagement shoots. It *makes* me go to this awesome places and have fun. I have discovered more about my new home state just by having couples speak up and say ‘Well- what about here? Or we love here!’ So little by little, I’m making my way across the state. And Rocky Neck Pavilion is now high on my list of ‘must revisit’ places.

The places you’ll go

I tend to surprise people a lot because I’m pretty active when it comes to getting images I want. I’ll climb things, move things, do a dance- whatever it takes to get the image I want. This tends to surprise people- particularly guests at weddings.

So Natalie and I just went up to VT to do a carnival theme wedding. Natalie and I had discussed how I was going to capture the brides on the swing carnival ride best. My first thought, “Uh…go up with them and ride the thing!”. A guest overheard this and quickly said “Oh no, that’s not possible. You can’t take photos doing that! It’s not doable.”

Fast forward an hour to when the ride was opening. I saw the brides get on the ride out the corner of my eye (I was doing cake shots) and ran to get on. Natalie was busy moving some equipment from me and didn’t even see me go. That’s when she heard “Holy sh*t, is that the photographer on the swing?? Is she taking photos??” Cue Natalie to turn around, realize I’m on the swing taking photos. So she grabs my third camera and takes a few photos of me on the swing with all my camera gear.

I’ll admit that I was semi nervous. Me, in a carnival ride, swinging around, high above the ground, with all my equipment. But that thought lasted a moment because I knew I wanted the shot. Did I mention I’m terrified of heights? And get motion sick really easily? I got off the ride pretty wobbly and in my rush to get on the ride had basically spotted a guest watching and said “Hey, could-you-hold-my-second-camera-k-thanks-bye” and ran onto the ride. As I got off, I went to fetch my camera and thank the guest and the first thing out of her mouth was “Wow, that was badass.” Looking at the photos of me on the swing I look more ‘Uhhh…crap. I’m doing this.” than badass. But I’ll take it.

PLEASE tell me you’re going to post a couple of shots that you got up there! Please? I will now commence dying until I see at least one of them. My life is in your hands. No pressure or anything.
